Symmetric or asymmetric arms?
Every two-post lift makes this choice whether the listing tells you about it or not: are the four lifting arms the same length on both ends, or is one pair shorter than the other. It is the one genuinely configuration-level decision left once you have picked a capacity, and it is rarely explained on the page that sells the lift.
Symmetric: equal arms, centred vehicle
A symmetric two-post lift has four arms of equal length, so the vehicle sits centred between the two columns once it is raised. Weight distributes evenly across both columns, which is the more forgiving geometry for a long-wheelbase vehicle — a full-size truck or a van.
The trade-off: with the vehicle centred, there is less room to open its doors or to walk between it and the columns while it is up.
Asymmetric: offset arms, forward vehicle
An asymmetric (offset) two-post lift has shorter arms at the front, longer at the rear, which shifts the vehicle forward of the columns' centreline once raised. That opens a genuine walk-through path and lets the doors clear the posts — the reason to specify this geometry in the first place.
The trade-off is a less even load split across the two columns, and the front columns typically see somewhat less material margin at the same rated capacity, which is one reason a symmetric lift at a given rating is often the cheaper of the two.
When it actually matters
A single-bay garage you also walk through. If the two-post is the only way in or out of part of the garage while a vehicle is up, asymmetric earns its keep immediately.
You get in and out of the vehicle while it is raised. Detailing, checking under-dash work, loading and unloading — anything where the doors need to open with the vehicle up favours asymmetric.
A long-wheelbase truck or van as your main vehicle. Symmetric is the more conservative, and often cheaper, choice here.
A shop bay with clear space on both sides. Walk-through clearance is less valuable when you are not boxed in either way, and symmetric is the simpler, usually less expensive spec.
What the catalogue actually shows
Across our own 71-model range, both geometries appear at every capacity from 7,000 lb up, and symmetric still accounts for the larger share of listings in our most common 9,000-10,999 lb band. That tracks with the trade-off above: most buyers do not need the walk-through clearance badly enough to pay for it, but the buyers who do need it, need it specifically.
